'The Lone Ranger' Featurette Pits Armie Hammer Against Heights, Helicopter (Video)

The actor does his own stunt 2,000 feet above ground in the new Disney film.

Armie Hammer finds himself truly alone in the newest featurette from Walt Disney Pictures’ The Lone Ranger.

The short clip explains the intricacies behind one of the film’s riskiest shots, the Lone Ranger waking up on top of a spirit platform, a rickety wooden structure standing 2,000 feet above ground.
Filmed in Moab, Utah, at Dead Horse Point without a green screen or visual effects, Hammer, unharnessed, was nervous to perform the stunt.

“My head broke even of (sic) the platform and I saw nothing,” Hammer said. “Everything in my body was screaming, ‘Get down! Get down!’ It was pretty tense.”
Electing not to use a stunt double, Hammer stands face to face with a helicopter filming the scene, producing such vicious winds that "almost blew me off the [set],” he says.
A hint at the potential rawness to come in the film’s action, director Gore Verbinski jokingly states in the featurette about using green screen for these stunts, “No, I don’t know how to do that.”
The Lone Ranger stars Hammer, Johnny Depp, Tom Wilkinson and Helena Bonham Carter, and is set to be released in theaters July 3.
