Thanks to a high-octane street racing sequel and an Oscar-nominated musical movie, Universal has crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office.

UPI zoomed to the $1 billion mark thanks to the record-breaking performance of Fast & Furious 6, which has grossed $259.4 million at the international box office in its first week. The ensemble action pic will continue to do big business for UPI as it opens in six more international markets.
The studio’s other films from the first half of 2013 included Oscar-nominated musical ensemble pic Les Miserables ($238.9 million), Tom Cruise starrer Oblivion ($180.4 million), horror thriller Mama ($74.9 million) and comedy Identity Thief ($39.8 million).
Universal has eight more films coming in 2013 that could help the studio surpass last year's international total of $1.794 billion: sci-fi thriller The Purge; CG-comedy sequel Despicable Me 2; Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds sci-fi action-comedy R.I.P.D.; Edgar Wright’s The World’s End; teen superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2; romantic comedy About Time; Malcolm D. Lee’s The Best Man follow up, The Best Man Holiday; and action flick 47 Ronin, starring Keanu Reeves.
