BURBANK, Calif. -- Pass the tissues!
On
Sunday night’s “Drop Dead Diva,” Lex Medlin’s Owen French seemed to
close the door on his romantic relationship with Brooke Elliott’s Jane
Bingum.
Jane spent the episode of
the Lifetime series defending a woman jilted by her fiance, and the case
prompted Owen and Jane to finally have a big talk following their
wedding disaster.
Owen,
who is now Jane’s boss, opened his heart and in a speech at the end of
the show revealed how completely lonely and devastated he is since he
caught Jane kissing Grayson on their wedding day.
Lex told
all about filming the tearjerker episode and whether he thinks there’s
still hope for Owen and Jane to, one day, rekindle their romance.
What did you pull from to deliver Owen’s big speech at the end of Sunday’s episode?
Lex Medlin:
To be honest, that speech was written really, really well. … Brooke
[Elliott] and I are really good friends and all I had to do — she was
off camera — was look at her. She was getting choked up and saying those
words every single time I just got choked up. It just broke my heart.
It really broke my heart when we were doing the scene.
What was it like the hours after you filmed this? Were you exhausted? Sad?
Lex:
I was definitely tired, but you know, I was a little exhilarated
because it went so well. I was actually smiling my entire drive back to
my apartment because I thought, ‘You know what? I think it’s gonna
work.’ And I talked to Brooke right after and she felt good too. I was
just pleased. I was really pleased.
How do you think people are going to feel about this, especially those who love Owen and Jane together?
Lex:
I don’t know. … I was very shocked initially [at the reaction to Owen
and Jane] and now I’m maybe not as shocked because I think the last
year, we showed how good we were together. Brooke and I became good
friends and I think that read on camera, so I don’t know. I think the
people who are Team Grayson are gonna be very pleased that maybe she can
go that direction. I don’t know. We haven’t seen the full season yet
and I think people who like Jane and Owen are probably gonna be a little
sad — and that’s not a bad thing.
Do you think Owen is Jane’s Aidan from ‘Sex and The City’?
Lex: [Pauses]
I’m not speaking because the idea of me being compared to Aidan is
glorious to me, because that dude is hot! That dude is smokin’ hot.
Is there potential for a future for Owen and Jane? Her heart opened up
to him after he left town following the heart attack.
Lex: That
was a little different, though. That was him having a heart attack and
disappearing. This was him… seeing her kiss Grayson on their wedding
day. That’s a tough one to get over. And me personally? I think he’s
absolutely capable of forgiving. I haven’t seen how this show’s gonna
play out yet this year, so I don’t know if that’s going to happen or
not. I’m very curious to see which direction it’s going to go.
What do you want to hint at about what their relationship is going to be like over the next couple of episodes?
Lex:
The next couple episodes is showing how they can function together and
seeing if Owen is going to forgive or not and Jane is definitely trying
to get them back on the path that they were on. It’s just a matter of if
Owen is going to do that or not.
Do you think he’s a glutton for punishment taking the job at her law firm?
Lex:
It’s a great question. No. It’s so not his personality, because he’s a
very confident guy. The thing I’m finding interesting in this [is]… it
really does show what can happen when you get your heart broken, I mean
really broken. To see such a confident guy be so devastated is really
interesting to me. … He had everything going the way he wanted it [to]
and it all just got pulled out from under him in… five seconds. It all
just changed. And it’s interesting to me seeing how he reacts and it’s
interesting seeing how someone so confident Grayson’s in the office and now Owen is in the office because he’s
Kim’s new partner at the law firm. Can we expect a lot more tension?
Lex: Yeah.
You know what’s funny, I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s
interesting how Owen affects everybody, including Kim Kaswell and even —
a little bit — Stacy, and definitely with Grayson. But him coming with
where he’s at definitely affects everybody in the office in different
ways.
Does that have to do with his management style?
Lex:
It has to do somewhat with his management style. He’s very much a no BS
kind of guy and I think anytime somebody new comes into an office in
that kind of position, he might rub people the wrong way. I don’t know
how else to say it.
“Drop Dead Diva” airs Sundays at 9 PM on Lifetime.
