The 14th edition of the international awards -– held each year outside India -– was co-hosted by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and included Jean Claude van Damme as a presenter.
NEW DELHI – The 14th International Indian Film Academy Awards wrapped up Saturday night in Macau where Disney-UTV's Barfi was the big winner. The film – which was India's 2012 Oscar entry – picked up best actor (Ranbir Kapoor), best director (Anurag Basu), best film and best music (Pritam), among its total haul of 14 trophies.
Held ever year in a different location outside India, IIFA is organized by Mumbai-based event management company Wizcraft Entertainment. This was the second time the awards returned to Macau (after 2009) with the event held at the Venetian Macao-Resort Hotel owned by Sheldon Adelson's Las Vegas Sands.
Named after a traditional Indian sweet and also the name of the lead character (Kapoor) caught in a love triangle, the Chaplin-esque Barfi! also stars actress Priyanka Chopra who is currently making a push into the international pop music arena with a new video featuring Pitbull.
The awards were hosted by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actor Shahid Kapoor with the ceremony featuring performances by veteran actresses Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. Additional performers included actresses Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra and actor Ayushmann Khurrana, among others.
Vidya Balan – married to Disney-UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur – picked up best actress for her turn in Viacom18 Motion Pictures' mystery thriller Kahaani (Story).
Best supporting actor went to Annu Kapoor portraying a fertility doctor in the comedy Vicky Donor, while Anushkha Sharma won best supporting actress in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the last film directed by the late filmmaker Yash Chopra, who was also honored with the IIFA Forever award.
Vicky Donor also saw its lead pair winning best debut actor (Ayushmann Khurrana) and best debut actress (Yami Gautam).
Gauri Shinde won best debut director for her hit film English Vinglish starring Sridevi as a housewife struggling to learn English.
Best actor in a comic role went to Abhishek Bachchan for his performance in Bol Bachchan. Ranbir's father, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, picked up the best villain trophy for his turn in Agneepath.
Acting mainstay Anupam Kher was honored with IIFA's Indian International Cinema Outstanding Achievement Award. Acclaimed for his three-decade-plus career in India, Kher has also featured in various international projects such as Silver Linings Playbook. Kher received the award from international action star Jean Claude Van Damme. The IIFA weekend also saw other events including an acting workshop by Kher titled "100 years of Indian cinema: An actor prepares."
