Leonard Nimoy Wants to Play Spock in 'Star Wars VII' ... But He Shouldn't

"J.J.! I can be a Jedi. J.J., I’m ready!" 

That is how I imagine Leonard Nimoy asking J.J. Abrams to cast him in Star Wars: Episode VII. It probably wouldn't happen that way, but in an interview with StarTrek.com, the veteran Star Trek actor said he'd love to be in the new Star Wars film. When asked what he would say if Abrams offered him a part in Star Wars, Nimoy replied, "Oooh. Ooooh. Wouldn't that be fun. I would love to." But this idea is far from logical.

There's a lot of pressure on Abrams to make this film worth it, so he needs to stay on target. Throwing Spock into the Star Wars universe could turn Spock into the next Jar Jar Binks —and no one wants that. Search your feelings, fans. This isn't the casting decision we're looking for. 

But Nimoy is set on the idea that a crossover between two of sci-fi's biggest universes would be a good thing. "I think it would work wonderfully," he said. "I think it would work just great. I think it would be a great idea, and somebody ought to tell him that." Dammit Nimoy, you're a Vulcan, not a Jedi. There has always been a distinction between the two universes. This is not The Avengers.

Nimoy is fantastic as Spock; there's no question of that. But Spock does not belong on the Millennium Falcon. And Nimoy should not get to be in Star Wars just because he thinks it would be fun. After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.
