Ratings for Sunday night's Game of Thrones were not as high as expected for one of the most gruesome scenes in TV history.
The ghastly massacre in "The Rains of Castamere" wasn't a
surprise to hardcore fans of George R.R. Martin's book series, but the
shock was paramount to casual viewers. To sustain the surprise of the
violent Red Wedding, HBO chose not to promote the next-to-last episode
of the season as anything more than just the joining of Houses Stark and
Frey. Inevitably, the hopeless romantics and devoted readers tuned in
to the nuptials, but delivered only 5.2 million viewers, a slight decrease from the show's record high of 5.5 million.
Outrage over the apalling carnage blew up the
Twittersphere Sunday night, adding to the anticipation that ratings for
next week's season finale may reach an all-time high. Who knows what
will happen in the aftermath of the slaughter? With the loss of three of
the series' main characters, the Red Wedding has 'throne' us all for a
loop.
