After Successful Opening for 'The Purge,' Sequel Already in Development

The Purge

Universal Pictures
The Purge surpassed its low budget when it earned a surprising $36.4 million during its opening weekend. And it seems that one weekend is enough to determine that a sequel is in order. Producer Jason Blum's company tweeted that "The Purge 2 is in development."
The $3 million film is set in a world where crime rates are ridiculously low — except for a 12-hour period once a year when all crime is legal and emergency services are suspended. James and Mary Sandin (played by Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey) struggle to keep their children, and themselves, safe and survive the night.
Blum also produced all four Paranormal Activity films, so if you're looking to turn a low-budget horror franchise into a money-making machine, he's your man.
