Details of new Doha fest to be announced at Cannes
ROME — Tribeca Enterprises and the Doha Film Institute have ended their partnership, four years after launching the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, in what appears to be a recurring pattern with festivals in the Gulf.
Doha will continue to have a film festival managed by the DFI, but with a new format, details of which will be announced during the upcoming Cannes fest.
Announcement that Doha and Tribeca are parting ways comes after Australian-born Al Jazeera TV journo and film exec Amanda Palmer, who set up the first Doha Tribeca fest in 2009, exited as its topper in July 2012. Palmer was replaced by young Qatari banking exec Abdulaziz Al-Khater.
It also follows former Tribeca artistic chief Peter Scarlet’s exit as artistic director of the Abu Dhabi Film festival in August 2012, indicating a tendency by fests in the Emirates to want to go solo once they have laid the foundations and acquired know-how from outside experts.
“With DFI having successfully formed strong community and industry bonds, the new festival format will build on the passion for filmmaking from talent in the region and around the world,” Al-Khater said in a statement.
“We are defining a new niche for the film festival, which will serve as a platform for strengthening a home-grown film industry as well as continuing to build our international relations to promote Qatar as a cultural hub.”
Tribeca Enterprises in its statement said that they “partnered with Doha Film Institute to help launch an event that would create a sustainable foundation for the growth of a film community and industry in Qatar and the Middle East” and wished the DFI “the very best.”
