Spanish Film Screenings Set for June 17-19

The number of buyers and journalists scheduled to attend the festival is up from last year.

MADRID -- Spanish cinema’s top brass and Madrid politicos convened Monday to demonstrate support the 8th Madrid de Cine Spanish Film Screenings that runs June 17-19.
Some 69 buyers from 35 countries are confirmed to attend the screenings, which will be held at the Conde Duque Cultural Center and the Princesa theaters.
"The film industry is a great example of how the Spanish economy is going to recover through exportation," said Spanish Producers' Federation President Pedro Perez, repeating the mantra of recent years that Spanish films perform better abroad than they do at home.
Perez is due to give export figures for the past year at next week's event, though he said at Wednesday's presentation that the figures are encouraging.
"This sector is an example of why certain sectors are considered privileged sectors because they are key to the image of the country and act as a tractor to introduce Spain and its products abroad," said Foreign Trade Commission CEO's Maria del Coriseo Gonzalez-Izquierdo.
Upcoming Spanish titles like Juan Pinzas' New York Shadows, Guillermo Fernández Groizard This Isn't a Date and Papick Lozano's Casi Inocentes will be among the 14 films making their debut at international markets at the Spanish Film Screenings Madrid de Cine. Other titles at the screenings include Daniel Calpasoro's Compustion and David and Alex Pastors' Los Ultimos Dias.
Spanish actor Jose Coronado (No Rest for the Wicked) has been named the "godfather" of this year's event, the annual local star who adds a bit of glamor to the event.
