The New Black Poster - P 2013

Yoruba Richen's documentary will have its world premiere on Friday, June 14.

The New Black explores the complicated issues of gay rights and homophobia in the African American community.

Documentary filmmaker Yoruba Richen takes viewers into the homes, churches and streets to document conversations about this timely issue.
The film will have its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Friday, June 14.
Here, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively hosts the poster and a new clip for the project.

In the video, Richen investigates the rich history of the church to an African-American community, and how a sense of belonging can often require that there be another group of people who "do not belong."
"In order for people who have been trampled upon to feel powerful, there's a need to trample upon someone else," says one of the experts in the video.
Los Angeles Film Festival runs June 13 - 23.
