Erin Brockovich-Ellis, the environmental advocate portrayed by Julia Roberts in a 2000 movie, has issued a public apology after she was arrested on suspicion of intoxication while boating on Friday.
Brockovich-Ellis, 52, was reportedly struggling with mooring her
motor boat at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor. A breath test showed that her
blood-alcohol level was just over twice the legal limit of .08 percent,
and she was subsequently arrested. Brockovich-Ellis was later released
from the Clark County Detention Center after posting $1,000 bail.
On Sunday, Brockovich-Ellis said that she was not operating the boat in open waters and that “there was no public safety risk.” USA Today notes that Brockovich-Ellis was with a male companion at the time of her arrest.
“That being said,” she added, “I take drunk driving very seriously, this was clearly a big mistake, I know better and I am very sorry. After a day in the sun and with nothing to eat, it appears that a couple of drinks had a greater impact than I had realized.”
Brockovich-Ellis, who resides in Agoura Hills, Calif., came to fame after landing a job as a legal assistant and helping to bring down a California power company accused of polluting a city’s water supply. The events were depicted in 2000’s Erin Brockovich, with Roberts winning an Academy Award for her portrayal of the eponymous subject.
