'50 Shades of Grey' Screenwriter May Adapt 'The Little Mermaid,' Which Is a Little Horrifying

Mr. Christian Grey is releasing Kelly Marcel from his red room of pain for a quick dive under the sea. Screenwriter Marcel, who has the steamy duty of adapting the E.L. James' S&M-filled novel Fifty Shades of Grey into a film, is working on a deal with director Joe Wright to rewrite the classic underwater tale The Little Mermaid, according to Deadline.

Making the transition from whips and chains to mermaids and flounder is a logical path for Marcel. Well, not really. I would love to say that there's so many similarities between the spanking ways of Christian Grey, the copper-haired domineer, and the swimming skills of Ariel, the little mermaid, but frankly… there really aren't any.

Marcel, creator of the TV series Terra Nova, is Really trying to show just how versatile of a writer she is (I suppose we can assume that after looking at Hans Christian Anderson's story The Little Mermaid, Marcel's thoughts were, "Look at this fable, isn't it neat? Wouldn't it make my screenplay collection complete?"). But hopefully, she won't meld her mentalities on these projects and wind up with a version of the Little Mermaid not suitable for children...
