Miley Cyrus and Nicole Richie Take Hair-Raising Risks: 10 Standout Looks at the 2013 Met Gala

The Costume Institute's annual gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is arguably fashion's biggest night of the year. While stars gussy themselves up for the Oscars red carpet and let their hair down for the MTV Video Music Awards, it is at the Met Ball (as the event is colloquially dubbed) that Hollywood's A-List can showcase their high fashion know-how.
This year, the Met Gala celebrates the opening of the museum's exhibition PUNK: Chaos to Couture, which tracks punk's transformation from a street style to haute couture. Launch our gallery below to see which stars embraced the punk theme (*cough* Miley Cyrus) and who played it safe.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum stuns in a white satin gown with a beaded bodice.

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes skips jewelry in favor of a flowing white gown with a delicate, built-in necklace collar.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian stands out with a bold floral print.

Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst leaves little to the imagination in her cleave-baring feathered gown.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus embraces the punk theme of the night in a mesh gown and daring spiked hair 'do.

Minka Kelly

Minka Kelly channels another era in a romantic, gothic-inspired lace gown.

Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara's white lace dress with a plunging neckline is a showstopper, accessorized perfectly with dark lipstick and a slick updo.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker didn't become a fashion icon by playing it safe. She takes a risk in an elaborate headdress and watercolor print gown.

Solange Knowles

Solange Knowles is retro chic in a bold print and statement-making earrings. Her brushed out afro gives the look a laidback '70s vibe that is oh so cool.

Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour, the evening's host, looks (surprisingly) soft and pretty in a bright, floral gown.

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts proves you can't go wrong in a little black dress.

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum's smokey cat eye is a striking compliment to her soft, feminine gown.

Hailee Steinfeld

Sixteen-year-old Hailee Steinfeld is age-appropriate in a sweet, tea-length gown, but edges up her look with heavy eye makeup and an asymmetrical hairstyle.

Karolina Kurkova

One of the few to choose a shorter number, Karolina Kurkova shows off her gams in a bold minidress.

Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie spices up a cream beaded gown with a shock of silver hair. If we didn't know better, we'd say her look was inspired by Hades as seen in Disney's Hercules.
