But now the man who actually married the couple has offered up some exclusive details about the ceremony to E! News.
Mayor Aimé Navello revealed "there were 10 people" that attended the 10-minute long ceremony on Saturday in the south of France at the town hall (Hotel De Ville) in Mazan.
"Their two witnesses (for the marriage ceremony) were Keira's parents," Navello said. "The other people were all brothers, sisters and family. There were no other celebrities as part of the town hall ceremony."
Navello went on to explain that one can only get married on Saturday and all weddings must be done in the town hall to be legal. So even if one were to exchange vows in a church there, you would still need to have the town hall ceremony as well.
"It was held in the upper room where the weddings are usually done," Navello noted. "There were no flowers."
Navello added, "It was really lovely. They were really happy. You could see it. They were laughing and sharing this moment with family. It was very emotional, but really simple. They were happy about the rings and they took pictures of them."
As for vows, Navello pointed out that Knightley and Righton did not repeat any, as only the town mayor is allowed to recite them. They simply said "I do."
Navello said the newlyweds are the first celebrity couple he has married.
"They were really simple, nice people," he insisted. "They seemed very happy and in love."
