The timeless maxim once reverberated through a strobe-lit hotel room proves itself true once more: There ain't no party like a Scranton party. This weekend upheld this tested truth when the Pennsylvania city hosted a four-block parade honoring The Office, which comes to a close later this month after a 9-season run. Present for the party were many of the NBC sitcom's starring players, including former headliner Steve Carell, who left the show in 2011.
As Reuters reports, thousands of citizens attended the celebratory event, with local businesses participating with their own Office tributes. The Scranton-based Frank Regan Funeral Home contributed headstones marking the forthcoming demise of the series. Apparently, The Office has done wonders for many a local business, including the sitcom's oft-mentioned hangout Poor Richard's Pub, a real tavern in town.
A local baseball stadium hosted a cast party, at which Carell addressed attendants with a surprise speech: "Thank you, Scranton," the actor said. "This all is because of you." Also present were stars John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer (pictured above), Ellie Kemper (who compared the entire ordeal to a visit from the Rolling Stones, and "the parade scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off,"), Kate Flannery, Oscar Nunez and Briam Baumgartner, who serenaded the public with a rendition of "Roxanne" by The Police. Take that, Scrantonicity! Rock on, Scrantonicity II!
